As an experienced and approachable team of Independent Financial Advisers (IFAs) based in Bishops Waltham, Hampshire, you can be assured that we will help you to achieve your lifetime financial goals with straight-forward advice that makes sense to you.

Better Financial Planning is owned and led by Robert Bolton, Ian Batterbee and Sara Walker. Between us we have over 60 years financial services experience. Overall, we are a team of 10 including our wonderful client support team.

As independent financial advisers directly authorised with the Financial Conduct Authority, we are not restricted in any way and are able to offer advice from the whole of the market. It is our intention to help our clients achieve a fulfilling retirement with the ability to leave a meaningful legacy.

It is also our belief that careful planning provides the security people need to be free to enjoy the lifestyle they have worked hard to achieve.

Ian Batterbee


Director (Data Protection Officer), Financial Planner

Personal profile

Having started in the financial services industry upon leaving school in 1989, Ian spent 15 years working for high profile insurance companies such as Aviva and Standard Life, gaining enviable industry experience and training before switching to the independent advice sector in 2004.

Since then, Ian has advised and worked with individuals, small and large businesses, solicitors and accountants in London, Hampshire and Oxfordshire to provide innovative solutions to a range of financial needs.

Making the complicated, uncomplicated!

Ian's clients say that his greatest skill is explaining complex financial concepts in the most straightforward terms.

Beyond work

Ian lives in Fareham, Hampshire where he enjoys time spent with family, friends and his young son.

Robert Bolton


Director (Compliance, Pension Specialist), Financial Planner

Personal profile

Robert started his career in the Royal Navy in 1977 as a Supply Officer and subsequently was selected for legal training. He was called to the Bar in 1987 and his last Naval job was Staff Legal Adviser to Flag Officer Scotland and Northern Ireland. He left the Royal Navy in 1992 and went to the Bar practising in a wide range of legal matters.

Through his work and colleagues, Robert identified the real need for clear financial advice in retirement planning some years ago and subsequently pursued a career in financial services.

Our Pensions and IHT Specialist

Robert specialises in inheritance tax planning and all areas of pension advice, including investing in commercial property via Self Invested Personal Pension Plans (SIPPs).

Beyond work

Robert lives in Bishops Waltham with his wife and 2 sons. He enjoys playing golf when he gets a chance!

Sara Walker


Director (HR, Business Development), Financial Planner

Personal profile

Sara has worked in financial services for 29 years. Sara started off with a major insurance company, progressing to working within the independent financial advice sector early on in her career.

Before her children, Sara worked as a Financial Adviser and also has experience in compliance and management. Sara took a short break in her career when her first son was born in 2001 and again in 2003 when her twin boys were born.

Subsequently she worked in support, paraplanning and management roles within IFA businesses.

The Chief Planner

Sara is a keen advocate of financial planning and enjoys the satisfaction of enabling clients to feel secure about their future and turn their dreams into achievable goals.

Beyond work

Sara lives in Fair Oak with her husband and 3 sons. Outside of work she enjoys her busy family life, walking her dog Ronnie and yoga.

Helen Webb


Senior Support to Directors & Accounts

Personal profile

Helen started her career in civil engineering which she enjoyed immensely.

After a break to raise her 3 daughters, Helen returned to work and trained as a bookkeeper/administrator.

Helen is also a fully qualified and experienced yoga teacher with established classes in the local area.

Keeps us all in check!

Helen supports the Directors with the running of the business and does all the internal bookkeeping. She manages the property administration for clients with commercial property assets within their pensions.

Beyond work

Helen loves teaching yoga and improving her piano skills with further lessons and practice. Nothing, however, beats time spent with her husband, 3 daughters and grandchildren.

Lynn Jastrzebski


Office Manager

Personal profile

Lynn joined Midland Bank after leaving school.

After a break to raise her 2 children, she returned to work in several administration roles.

Lynn has spent the last 17 years working in the financial services industry in administration support and office manager roles.

Keeping the wheels turning

Lynn runs the office and supports Sara with the HR and day to day management. She is the central cog of our wheel and keeps us all in order.

Beyond work

Outside of work Lynn enjoys walking, gardening, Zumba, travel (she is currently working her way through her ‘bucket list’) and spending time with her family, especially the grandchildren.

George Thomson



Personal profile

George has worked in financial services since leaving university with a BA (Hons) Degree in Business Management.

George has worked at NatWest, as a Customer Adviser. George then became a Protection Consultant, before gaining experience in investments and pensions at Old Mutual Wealth.

Chief Report Writer & Researcher

George works  on all the paraplanning providing support to Ian, Robert and Sara. He is a central point of contact for clients if Ian, Robert or Sara are unavailable. George researches and prepares our clients’ financial planning reports.

Beyond work

Outside of work George is engaged to be married and is currently saving for the wedding next year. He regularly attends the gym and enjoys spending time with his family and the odd game of poker!

Christopher Emerson



Personal profile

Since leaving university with a Diploma in IT Management, Chris has worked in a variety of services ranging from food, hospitality and IT roles. Chris has a wealth of computer technical skills.

Chief detective!

Chris provides administration support to the paraplanners. Chris liaises with product and platform providers to diligently obtain information on a client’s existing pensions, investments and protection plans.

He obtains the information George needs to carry out research. Chris assists Helen with the internal bookkeeping.

Chris also has started to support Sara with business development and internal software systems.

Beyond work

Outside of work Chris loves to travel, read, play video games, has a passion for astronomy, and is also a keen swimmer. Chris is half Hungarian and is fluent in the Hungarian language. He likes to spend his free time with friends and family.

Laura Gearey



Personal profile

Since leaving college where Laura studied Photography, she has worked as a photographer in many places including a top London photography studio, London Zoo and P&O Cruise Ships.

In her last role she was the acting manager carrying out HR and administration duties. Laura is very organised and likes to make sure everything is in order. Laura is confident and friendly on the phone and loves talking to people.

Laura provides administration support to the paraplanners. Like Chris, she liaises with product and platform providers to diligently obtain information on a client’s existing pensions, investments and protection plans.

Laura organises and prepares the annual reviews for our clients and supports Sara with project work. Laura enjoys getting to know our clients and solving their queries.

Beyond work

In Laura’s spare time she loves travelling with her partner, from Route 66 in America to exploring the countryside and coast in their campervan. Spending time with family is always a must. However, whatever she is doing Laura’s camera goes everywhere with her.
